Hemorrhoids and Children

By Heather-Jane Hunter

Children are less likely to get hemorrhoids than adults but thats not to say that hemorrhoids are unheard of in children. Hemorrhoids can, and do affect children. As in adults, hemorrhoids in children can occur internally or externally and a thought to be caused by an increase in blood pressure in the veins in and around the anal passage. Too high blood pressure often results in the formation of a hemorrhoid. Bowel movement (particularly with hard stools) can irritate and usually aggravate hemorrhoids to the extent where they can become very painful.

Common signs which point to hemorrhoids include if your child complains of pain while going to the toilet, or sees blood in or around the stools or on the toilet paper, if the anal area is very itchy or if a lump of skin protrudes from the anal canal or outside of the anus.

Hemorrhoids in children are most often caused as a result of straining due to constipation. Constipation is a common illness for children so special attention should be paid if your child shows any signs of constipation. Constipation can be triggered by a diet which is low in fiber, by not getting sufficient exercise (rare in children), and through dehydration.

Children dont have the same options for hemorrhoid treatment as adults. Surgery for example is almost always out of the question " its just too harsh on children and can have long last physical and emotional effects. A lot of the time hemorrhoids in children can be treated by simply changing their diets. Make sure they have a lot of fruit and vegetables in their diets and most importantly a lot of fiber. Cereals are a great source of fiber, as are beans and lentils. Try working these into the childs diet to see effect it has.

Increasing childrens fluid intake is also a very good way to help prevent hemorrhoids. Fluids make the stools softer and help reduce and cure constipation; they also help pass the stool through the body much faster.

Always ensure that the hemorrhoid is kept clean at all times. Take special care when cleaning the area (use a soft cloth or wet toilet paper) and try bathing the child several times a day. This will be soothing and help reduce the pain caused by the hemorrhoids.

If after 5 days you have tried the suggestions above and your childs condition hasnt improved then its time to see you doctor or try another natural solution such as H-Miracle.
