Hemorrhoids During Pregnancy

By Heather-Jane Hunter

Hemorrhoids can be a very serious problem. Hemorrhoids are inflamed veins located in and around the rectum and anus. They can cause severe pain and also bleeding. Pregnant women are at higher than normal risk of getting hemorrhoids as pregnancy is a leading factor in hemorrhoids.

Throughout pregnancy women can get hemorrhoids after becoming constipated. Constipation is one of the most common causes of hemorrhoids and women who are pregnant are at higher risk of becoming constipated.

Another factor which leads to hemorrhoids in pregnant women is increased blood pressure in the lower half of the body (and increased blood volume). This increased blood pressure causes the veins to swell and makes them highly prone to becoming hemorrhoids.

Also during pregnancy, the progesterone hormone is secreted from the body that causes the walls of the veins to relax. It results in further swelling. The progesterone also causes the slowing down of intestinal tract that may result in extra straining, thereby causing constipation and hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids in pregnant women can be avoided. In order to avoid hemorrhoids you should make sure you eat foods which contain plenty of fiber. You should also make sure you drink a lot of water " 2 liters per day is recommended. Always avoid straining during bowel movement and try to get at least 20 minutes of exercise per day.

If you do get hemorrhoids while pregnant, there are many things you can do to prevent them from getting worse. Taking a sitz bath in warm water 2 " 3 times per day helps to keep the hemorrhoid clean and reduce pain. Combining this with careful cleaning of the anus after bowel movement (sometimes using a damp cloth helps) also helps to prevent the hemorrhoid from getting any worse.

As hemorrhoids during pregnancy are a common illness, a lot of creams and topical ointments are available in pharmacys and drugstores. Be wary when using these as many of them only work to reduce the symptoms of hemorrhoids. Some patients report that burning sensations actually increased when using creams.

Hemorrhoids can also be a problem for pregnant women after childbirth. Giving birth can lead to hemorrhoids because of the straining that is required to have the baby. Natural hemorrhoid treatments are recommended to anyone who suffers hemorrhoids after childbirth.
