High Blood Pressure Linked to Depression?

Someone asked me recently about depression treatment. He purchased the High Blood Pressure Program and jokingly asked if he could be depressed from it.

Research does reflect a link between the two. Both ideas have been studied; hypertension leading to depression as well as depression leading to high blood pressure.

Depression as the original problem: A person who has suffered long term depression or other anxiety disorders is much more likely to develop high blood pressure.

People who suffer from depression tend to practice poor eating habits and do not necessarily tend to their health properly (including monitoring high blood pressure.)

However, surprisingly, even the people involved in the study who did not engage in poor eating habits, smoking etc. also suffered from high blood pressure.

It is believed that there may be changes in the hormones in a person who suffers from depression for an extended period of time which could increase blood pressure.

There is also evidence that blood pressure can rise slightly as a result of many anti-depressant medications.

Given these factors, there is a link between depression and high blood pressure.

High Blood Pressure as the primary with depression resulting:

The link here tends to lead back to the high blood pressure medication. The side effects clearly state on many medications: DEPRESSION.

Here again, we see that in the effort to solve one issue, another is created.

Also a possible contributor is the anxiety caused from a person having to deal with high blood pressure.

Given that stress is a consistent theme in so many physical problems, there is little wonder that both high blood pressure and depression can result.

Practices that can help high blood pressure regardless of teh cause:

Limit or avoid drinking. Blood pressure can increase for some after just a single drink.

Do not smoke. Smoking create many problems including increased blood pressure.

Eat well. Choose fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible to help the body improve stamina and control weight.
