Is Your Eclectus Parrot Healthy?

By John Savage

As the owner of an Eclectus parrot, you must be able to read the signs which tell you that your parrot is not feeling too well. You owe it to them to be able to do this.

Your Eclectus should be a lively, alert, sociable bird, but if you find his behaviour changing in any way then watch out. This could be a sign that he is unwell, or in pain, and in need of an urgent visit to the vet's.

To tell if your Eclectus is healthy you need to look at its eyes and nose. There should be a dry nose and bright eyes, but if the nose is runny or the eyes are moist or watery then that is an unhealthy sign.

Now another thing that you should be aware of is your parrots eating habits. The Eclectus parrot loves his food, and sometimes can eat too much which can cause a weight problem! But if you discover your parrot has gone off his food, then this should set the alarm bells ringing.

Keep a regular check on your parrots vent, which is located just under the tail feathers. It should be clean and dry, but if for any reason you discover that it is not clean and dry, then this could indicate a problem and a visit to the vet's is recommended.

A nicely groomed parrot, with lovely smooth feathers is a sure sign that your Eclectus is enjoying good health. It goes without saying therefore that if the opposite appearance is the case, then you really should get in touch with your vet.

The last thing that you need to look at on a daily basis is your parrots beak, feet and legs. Check that they are not dry or cracked and while you are doing that keep a watch on your parrots nails. If they are too long then can can be quite uncomfortable, so when needed, do clip them.

Let me say that just so long as your parrot is getting the correct minerals and nutrients that he needs, any health problem that he might develop should quickly right itself. Often all that is needed is a slight change in diet.

Having said that let me emphasis that these checks should in no way replace a proper diagnosis by your vet. They have a trained eye for health issues and it would not be fair on your beloved parrot if you did not seek your vets advice. In conclusion, part of the answer is to know the sign of a healthy parrot and this will enable you to act quickly when a health problem arises. - 14915
