Making the decision to home school might be the easy part, now you have to select the right curriculum for your child. This is no easy task and can seem quite daunting, so break your tasks into sections and take your time.
Your child's learning style is an important aspect of selecting the right curriculum. It is in fact where I would begin the search. When learning style is referred to, it means does your child learn visually or by seeing the material, do they operate better from a hands on basis, or is a combination of the two more their style. Knowing this in the beginning will help you better define which curriculums you should start with.
A factor for many of us is cost. Curriculum prices will vary greatly, so it is extremely important to know your budget before you begin your search. Different programs will have different offers, with some seeming far more substantive than others. Some just seem to have fancy packaging. In most cases, the company will send you samples of their curriculum, which will help you immensely in getting a feel for their product.
Believe it or not, it is important to understand your personality when selecting a curriculum. If you tend to be a more laid back, relaxed person, a rigid, regimented program might not be suitable for you. Being realistic about what works for your and your family and what does not is important.
With the high number of homeschooling groups and association in your area you should have access to other homeschoolers. Talk to the other parents, and find out what curriculums they use. Discuss what they like and do not like about past and current programs. Ask them if they use one entire curriculum or do they piece together several?
Selecting your child's curriculum should be done based on your personality, your budget and your child's preferred learning style. - 14915
