SEO Rules on Keyword Positioning in Your Site

By Irmin J. Roybal

Placement of keywords correctly may significantly increase rating of your web site by search engines. The general rules listed here are part of SEO " Search Engine Optimization. Other SEO issues, such as getting efficient site indexing and some bad ideas practiced in order to cheat search engines I have described elsewhere. Before I will turn to the list, one important note must be made, though. Never rely on SEO as a sole source of web traffic to your site. This would place your web success on the mercy of web robots, and this will be bad, because robots dont know mercy.

Main rule of keyword posting: the higher keyword or key phrase placed in the page, the higher weighting it will get by search engine.

Formatting: Emphasized text gets higher attention of the spiders. So, you can use the following:

- use keywords and key phrases in strings marked with h-tags (i.e. headings);

- use bold font on key phrases, of course, do not overdo that, 2-3 times and in right places would be enough;

- same with italics.

Page Title: is the highest in SE rating string. Therefore, it is good if it carries the main keywords and/or key phrase. For the same time this is title, not a keyword list, so it should be original and on the subject. Also, the title must be reasonably brief: robot will not read further than 50 " 80 first characters.

Site description: meta-tag Description will not affect your ranking, but this is the text which will be shown in search results. So you have to make it informative and attracting attention, so it will be chosen by the user who did the inquiry.

Using links: both internal and external with keywords will give your site a little extra rating. As always, this idea must not be over-done, because people are usually getting irritated fast by too wordy links. Moderation is a universal virtue, and SEO is not an exception.

Pages: Content is very important, so the more pages your site has and the more often new pages are added, the better will be site rating. Keywords (or key phrases) are working better for your site rating when they are distributed as one per page. Placing 2 or 3 similar phrases per page is OK, but if there will be more, the effect will be reduced. Among all pages index page is the most weighted one, it has the higher chance to appear on top of search results and therefore, making right choice of leading keyword(s) in home page is important.

Good luck! - 14915
