Why Should You Own a Greenhouse?

By Susan Potts

So youre thinking about a greenhouse but you are afraid its just too difficult to grow your own food year round. Well, it may be and again it may not be. There are a lot of things you can do to make it easier including using some automation like solar louver vents. It can be as easy or as hard as you make it.

If you love gardening already, you will have a blast gardening year round with a greenhouse. If you are new to gardening, start with an open mind and start growing the things you love to look at or love to eat. Dont grow something just because its easy if you dont like it. You will loose your motivation and thats the last thing you will want to do once your greenhouse is operational.

You dont necessarily need a big fancy greenhouse to get started. A basic garden greenhouse might be the only thing you need to feed your gardening hobby year round whether you enjoy herbs and vegetables or orchards and other beautiful flowers. Basic doesnt mean small or large as there are many good basic greenhouses made to fit areas of varying sizes.

When considering the size greenhouse you should build or buy make sure you have adequate room in your yard for the size youre thinking about and leave some room for your other garden pursuits in the spring and summer. Do not build or buy anything until you are completely satisfied with the area you have chosen. This will save you time and money in the long run.

Supposedly, The Roman Emperor Caesar wanted cucumbers year round and someone discovered they could do it covering a wooden frame with glass and keeping warm rocks heated during the winter and greenhouses were born. Its still that way today, gall or plastic wrapped on a frame, walls and roof, that let light in and keep everything else out; just a very basic greenhouse.

If you are serious about year round greenhouse gardening you will want to invest in a heater so make sure you have this in your budget. Heaters are a must when the weather turns cold to help insure success. A couple of other items you may want to plan for include wire rack shelving for potted plants and storage and rods for hanging baskets. Plans to keep your greenhouse neat and tidy will also help you be successful. - 14915
